Zonta Club awards $15,200 in scholarships

The Zonta Club of Hilo has awarded over $15,000 in scholarships to 15 women for 2023.

The Women’s Nursing Degree Scholarship recipients from University of Hawaii at Hilo are Sienna A.K. De Sa ($1,000), Nina Nabor ($1,000) and Yurise Yamaguchi ($1,000).

The Women’s Nursing Degree Scholarship recipients from Hawaii Community College are Carolyn Mathieson ($1,000), Aubrey Song ($1,000), Tyanna Arannaydo ($250), Kayla Gray ($250), Amanda Kroessig ($250) and Alana Paiva ($250).

The Barbra An Pleadwell Scholarship recipients are Tyler Dela Cruz ($2,500) and Pohakalaokeaolani Van Veen ($2,500).

The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship recipient is Zariah Rivera ($1,000).

The Women in STEM Scholarship recipient is Sofia Ferreia Coleman ($1,000).

The Young Woman in Public Affairs Award recipients are Claire Kildahl ($1,200) and Kaylee Yamada ($1,000).

“With this scholarship, I am able to upkeep my academic costs such as books, dorming, food, or even athletic costs that will come up, all to ensure that I am able to keep a quality education,” said Yamada. “Most importantly, the Zonta club is allowing me to pave the way for my new life and with it, I will be able to accomplish the goals I’ve set for myself in all aspects of my life.”

Rivera, Ferreia Coleman and Kildahl — the top winners in three of the categories — have been advanced from the club level to compete for additional awards and scholarships at the district and international levels of Zonta.
